The Portland Observatory was built atop Munjoy Hill in 1807. It is the last surviving maritime signal tower and in 2006, three years before our visit, it was designated as both a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. We didn’t have enough time to go inside.
