Text to a Young Friend for Thanksgiving

While hanging out with a friend and his son, a young adult, watching football, debated and wondered if he should reconnect with his family of origin on his mother’s side, especially his grandparents. Should he go over there alone on Thanksgiving? He felt they were estranged. His father had looked forward to spending Thanksgiving with his son, but also encouraged his son to reconnect with his ex-wife’s family. Either way, he would not be alone. Family is community, especially among these particular folks. After giving the topic some thought, I picked up my smartfone after I’d returned home to text the lad. The following is what I wrote:Here’s a powerful opportunity to reconnect with family & practice the practice of letting go to let bygones be bygones – even if others do not. My family of origin used to get into ugly self-righteous arguments during dinner & various reunions over the many political, religious, scientific, & cultural-social issues of the day. Tho we were brutally at odds over everything from Vietnam to Trump and Jesus to UFOs, it took the aftermath of a pandemic to bring us back together.

Didn’t hear back. Did learn he drove over by himself and had a great Thanksgiving holiday reconnecting with formerly-estranged family members.
