Ripples Sparkling in the Sunset

From a magickal evening at Lime Kiln Point State Park, San Juan Island, Washington

Ripples sparkle in the sunset on our honeymoon.

Faithlyn and I, newlyweds, sat in a restaurant on the edge of Friday Harbor and asked our server where do locals go to enjoy the best sunsets.

“At the old lighthouse at Lime Kiln!” she blurted as she stood up straight with a grin. “My parents used to run the lighthouse there back when it was a real, working lighthouse.”

So that’s where we went.

The old lighthouse at Lime Kiln Point. It still functions as an automated light. Lighthouse Keepers and their crews manned the watch over Haro Straight from 1919 into 1961.

We immersed ourselves in a quiet, mellow, and spectacular sunset over the border between two nation-states. Our two countries were once enemies in nearly-forgotten, long-ago wars and are now close allies and trading partners. Together Faithlyn and I marveled at this sunset as we wandered around the old lighthouse at the state park. A few other people claimed they saw a small group of whales way out in the sea, but we didn’t. Must’ve missed it. And that was OK as the setting sun turned clustered stands of madrona trees various shades of fiery golden rose.

Sunset “alpenglow” on the madrone (or madrona) trees clustered behind the lighthouse and its rocky seashore.

Eventually, as Planet Earth moved thru space and time further around the Sun as our star spiralled around the galaxy, it was over. The colors of the day faded gently from dusk into twilight into night. We drove back to our little rental cabin and heard a great horned owl hooting in the top of nearby trees as darkness quickly enveloped the forest. Memories of filming ripples of water sparkling in the sunset moved languidly in and out of time.
