Join Canada!
O People of Greenland! Denmark! Canada! Please hear me out. Listen to this proposal. For this is what to do: Canada, invite Greenland to join Canada as an equal province within its Dominion. Denmark, allow Greenland to depart your Kingdom with your Blessings. Greenland, go join Canada. That would really flummox the Americans! Greenland would maintain similar benefits of Denmark’s social democracy within Canada as the Maple Leaf Country is also a form of social democracy. Greenland would thus stay in NATO as part of Canada, Denmark would stay in the European Union, Canada would gain access to an old land rich with resources, and the USA would grumble and fuss. Canada, offer the Americans a few mineral rights and a couple of more military bases, remind them they won’t have to pay for nearly 60,000 people to maintain the same social democracy benefits the USA denies its own people, and be ready to defend all of Canada against a violent American tantrum. Ultimately, to be clear, for Greenland to join Canada must be the free choices of the people of Greenland and the people of Canada, especially the Indigenous populations of both lands.
Nations are in another uproar over Donald Trump’s gluttonous desire for the United States to engulf Greenland like some giant amoeba. Americans historically tend to seek expansion but also prefer their imperialism to be a bit more discreet. They prefer colonialism at a distance via economic and financial control, not territorial with yet more insufferable government jurisdiction. The Trump Administration is clearly setting up a fascist US regime of corporatist, oligarchic control of state apparatus while manipulating highly polarizing divides over race, religion, sexual and gender identities, nationalism, and wealth. Strong arguments can be made and have been made Donald Trump hijacked the Republican Party with his MAGA mafia cult, usurped the 2016 election with his intimidation of the Electoral College, and manipulated the 2024 election with voter suppression in battleground states. History shall judge.
History has already judged Denmark, other European countries, Canada, and the United States for their past actions including conquest, colonialism, genocide, and exploitation of the Indigenous Peoples of North America including Greenland. History shall judge again what happens next.
In an ideal world all of Earth’s humans would already have created a united, democratic planetary government with some type of democratic world republic with a global parliament. There were high hopes humanity would push our way forward after the end of the Cold War. After all, the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 as the culmination of the Second Hundred Years (World) War, brought forth the Congress of Vienna, the Concert of Europe, and the Treaty of Paris. The end of the First World War brought the movement for world unity closer with the League of Nations and the end of the Second with the United Nations. Both the Anti-Globalization Revolts and the Global War on Terror after the end of the Cole War, unfortunately, derailed any nascent rebirth for a united Planet Earth. So there is no United Earth Republic or Federation. Instead we seem to abide within a nasty, messy run-up to yet another world war with a mix of uncomfortable similarities to those conditions prior to the outbreaks of the First and Second World Wars. Indeed, there were so many local and regional wars between those two conflicts and into the Cold War many historians regard 1914-1991 as one long global war. Ditto for the world wars and related conflicts from 1688 to 1815 (or even 1833 if one includes Latin America theaters). Perhaps we Earth Humans do indeed need the so-called proverbial Third World War to finally compel our quarrelsome species to go beyond a constrained United Nations to choose full, peaceful, democratic unification. Alas, a third (and, obviously, it wouldn’t even the third true world war as we lost count along the way) would result in the annihilation of our civilization and the omnicidal destruction to Earth’s biosphere.
The Trump regime is an American abomination. It’s the culmination, distillation, and concentration of all the darker, sinister shadow forces within US history and politics. We cannot allow these forces to further facilitate the division of the planet into imperial superstates such as in George Orwell’s prescient novel, 1984. As an American, I feel shame beyond mere embarrassment this situation has arisen. I feel concern, alarm, outrage, apathy, fear, and grim, gritty fortitude. We must find ways, nonviolent ways, to remove this regime and work for peaceful world unification as a choice to best resolve our global challenges.
So, once again: People of Greenland, seek to join Canada! People of Denmark, let Greenland go! You know Greenland was going to go sooner or later. People of Canada, surprise the world and welcome in Greenland. People of the United States, treat Greenland, Denmark, and Canada with the respect your closest Allies deserve. People of Earth, wake up! Learn to work together for our planet. Choose world unity, peacefully, without any violence.
