An autopsy in progress on a victim of the World War I influenza at an American military hospital at Kerhuon Base, France, staffed by North Carolinians. Excised lungs were blue and full of fluid. Many people had blue and black faces from severe oxygen deprivation and respiratory distress, unusually for influenza but not this particular mutation.
